27th – No scouts, Half term

26 Oct

No scouts this week because its half term.

Next week is our Halloween party and will be non uniform and fancy dress so start thinking about your costume. prizes for the best fancy dress!

Please remember the details below:

BONFIRE & FIREWORKS NIGHT, SATURDAY 7TH NOVEMBER

Our annual Bonfire & Fireworks night will be held on Saturday 7th November on the field at the rear of the Crown Hotel (perhaps better known as Etc). The bonfire will be lit at 6.30 p.m. and the fireworks will be set off starting at 7.00 p.m. The “gates” will be open from 6.00 p.m.

This year we will be selling light-sticks, sweets, some refreshments and mulled wine. Etc will be selling pizza slices, other Italian type food and alcoholic drinks in the marquee. Etc. will be keeping their profits from this which is their return for providing the field for our use. Entrance fee is £5.00 per adult, £2.50 per child (age 2 to 16) and free for explorers/scouts/cubs/beavers who help us to prepare the bonfire.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

We would be really grateful if parents and/or explorers/scouts/cubs could help us build the bonfire, put up the marquee, etc. on Saturday morning 9.00 a.m. to 12.00 a.m. and/or make good the field on the following Sunday 2.00 p.m. to 3.00 p.m. Many hands make light work. Old clothes, a spade (and a rake on the Sunday) and gloves are a must. If you have a wheel-barrow then please bring it along!

REMEMBRANCE DAY PARADE, SUNDAY 8TH NOVEMBER

(A LITTLE DIFFERENT THIS YEAR)

Explorers, Scouts, Cubs and Beavers should turn up at the St Helens Church Lych Gate at 10.15a.m. The change to the start location is due to the British Legion having been sold. If you are driving it is probably best if you drop explorers, scouts and cubs off at the main church entrance and move smartly on. They can walk through the church grounds to where we will all be waiting. Otherwise I suggest you park in one of the local car parks and walk from there.

Explorers, scouts, cubs and beavers should be dressed in smart, full uniform. Black schoolshoes, black/grey school trousers and a poppy should be worn. A small sum of money for the collection is advisable. Beavers will not attend the church service and will leave the parade at the church entrance at around 10.40 a.m. Parents should collect their Beavers from there.

Always difficult to predict precisely but proceedings should be over by noon at the Lych Gate.

Attendance is regarded as obligatory but if your son / daughter is unable to take part, for good

reason, then please let the relevant section leader know.

CHRISTMAS SHOPPING IN LIVERPOOL

Unfortunately we will not be able to run the event this year as our application for (cheap) coach travel has been turned down. Normal coach fees are too high to make this a viable event. Watch this space for next year when we hope to return to normal!

BURNS NIGHT, SATURDAY 23RD JANUARY 2015

Once again the excellent Crofters will be entertaining us for a rowdy evening of Scottish dancing (well attempt at dancing), music, food and drink at the Community Centre. Keep this date in your diaries. Watch this space for more details.

VIRTUAL BALLOON RACE TICKET SALES

Don’t forget to return your balloon race tickets – before 6th November would be great. Thanks.

AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST – A REQUEST FOR HELP

The village is getting bigger and our waiting list is getting longer. The waiting list for beavers (6 to 8 years old) is around 50, it is quite common for those waiting to have turned 7 years old before getting in; later applicants won’t get in at all. Both cub packs and the scout troop have waiting lists too. We need the following help in order to thrive (or indeed survive):

Beaver Leaders:

Matt Wesson runs a very active beaver colony supported by Dave Walker and two or three willing helpers. Matt needs more warranted leader support to help run the colony. Ideally we would like to set up a second colony so that we could reduce our waiting list and give more young ‘uns the chance to have two years in beavers. If you or anyone you know feel that you could help out in any way then please contact me. We’ll be delighted for you to give it a go.

We are at full stretch with cub leaders at present, with both cub packs bursting at the seams.Yes, we are coping as those involved in running the packs are very experienced and dedicated but more help would be very much appreciated. Again, if you can help then please get in touch

Scout and Explorer Leaders:

The same goes for both these sections. Explorers in particular are struggling as there is only Steven Allen regularly attending as a warranted leader. Working with this sort of age group is very different from working with cubs and beavers but the rewards are just the same (purely moral, not financial!). Again, if you can help then please get in touch with me.

13th oct – Senses Night

12 Oct

Normal night at the hut 7-9pm.

Big thank you from the leaders to the parents that turned up last week and we hope you had fun!! We learnt a lot valuable information from that night and we will try our best to work into our term. Summer camp dates for 2016 are up on the page (at top). This date was booked before we spoke with parents about camp so we will try and work in some of the information we discussed soon.

6th oct – Open night (parents invited)

4 Oct

Normal night 7-9pm at hut.

We are planning to hold our first open night this week and we are inviting parents along to join in.

Can a parent(s) set some time aside and join their scout along for the evening. We the leaders want to try and give the parents a better idea of what we get up to on a Tuesday.

We understand that there might be some scout brother/sister child care issues but if you could make time it would be great.

We would also like to see if the parents have any interesting job or skills that might help provide an interesting Tuesday night.

Reminder subs is £43 this term
